Tried, Tested + True >>> Not All Vitamin A’s Are Created Equal

Not all Vitamin A derivatives are created equal! (there’s even one you should avoid)

Regardless of the skin issues or concerns you have, Vitamin A has a place in your skin care regimen. Acne, wrinkles, brown spots and hyper-pigmentation, when treated with the correct formulations can all be treated and with exceptional results. In fact this clever nutrient can communicate with damaged cells to function normally again. (often referred to as DNA repair)

1. RETINOIDS // The prescription form of vitamin A, also known as tretinoin, retinoic acid and adapalene. When applied topically it is accepted directly into the skin cell, which makes it a highly effective ingredient for the treatment of lines, wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation and acne. Unfortunately, retinoids can be very irritating to the skin and should be SLOWLY phased in a BALANCED skin care routine.

2. RETINOL // This form of Vitamin A is an OTC (non prescription) alternative. Retinol needs to be converted into retinoic acid (a 2-step process) which lowers the effectiveness (and potential for irritation), but despite this, retinol still packs enough punch to be gentle enough while delivering exceptional results for aging and acne-prone skins. Although there may be some mild irritation initially, this usually subsides after a few weeks of use.

3. RETINYL PALMITATE // This is a combination of retinol and palmitic acid, which although converts to retinoic acid, the path is long (3 steps) and by the time it has converted to retinoic acid has lost much of its ability to make any difference to the skin cell. You would need a high concentration of retinyl palmitate for it to be significantly effective and most skin care brands who use retinyl palmitate as their sole source of vitamin A rarely put enough in the cream or serum. It is not enough to add a sprinkling of a derivative of vitamin A just so it can be added to the ingredient list and marketed as an anti-ageing solution!! An anti-aging cream that has retinyl palmitate as its sole source of vitamin A is a waste of your money and we do NOT recommend it.

SkinScience’s Favorite Summer Skin Products!

Summer has FINALLY arrived!!!! In the Great White North, that is a statement which brings us lots of JOY!  We know how easy it is to get lost in enjoying your summer, sometimes so much you forget your skin until Fall, at which point it can be hard to undo the damage.

Here are our top 5 hacks for keeping your skin in tip top shape throughout the summer months.  We promise, all are so easy you won’t even know you are working on your skin! <3

1. Suncreens (re-apply, re-apply, re-apply, without breaking out!)

Layering sunscreens is vital. Most people forget that SPF needs to be reapplied every 90 minutes on days you are outside for long periods of time, so by lunchtime your daily morning application needs to be boosted. Re-applying even the lightest weight SPF is often messy and can leave your face feeling heavy.

Our favorite touch up or re-application SPF? ColoreScience Sunforgettable  Powder Sunscreen SPF 50. It applies and reapplies over and over without feeling heavy our leaving sticky residue.  No mirror is needed to ensure even coverage.  We also have it on good authority that it works great on kids! Particularly kids that don’t want to hold still long enough to get sunscreen applied to their faces! Its soft brush makes getting hard to cover areas like ears a breeze!

Available in 2 universally flattering colors: medium and tan.

2. DIY BB Cream (the only BB cream we usually approve of)

Make your own BB cream! Summer times calls for fresh faced complexions not mired down in cakey makeup.  But so many BB creams clog pores and lead to acne. The fix? SkinScience’s tried and true summer complexion finisher.  The recipe for your very own custom made BB cream.  It hydrates, protects from the sun, reduces inflammation, creates a lovely summer glow, and wont clog your pores!

  1. Mix 2 Drops of your favorite Vitamin C serum
  2.  Add a Large Pea sized amount of DermaQuest ZinClear SPF30
  3.  Add a Small Pea sized amount of Illuminare Mineral Foundation and voila!

3. C-Infusion Cleanser (removes sunscreen buildup, makeup and pollution!)

We’ve talked a lot about this cleanser. There is a reason for that!  It is a really functional product with lots of benefits! This cleanser smells DELIGHTFUL, seriously.  In the mornings, it is the perfect pick me up. Rejuvenating and refreshing! It also removes built-up sunscreen like nobody’s business, as well as makeup, sweat AND pollution. The icing on the skin cleanser cake?  It does all of this without drying you out!!!! Trust us, you will be glad you invested in yourself and bought one!

Purchase this summer essential here!

4. Hydrate, Water, H20, Eau, Agua, Aqua!!!!

Avene Thermal Spring Water aka “Miracle in a bottle”.  This is a VERY under rated product.  This product is bottled water from the Avene Thermal Spring in southern France.  It is world renowned for its healing and soothing properties.  It the summer, it creates soothing cooling mist anytime you need it.  It is a great layer under moisturizer to boost water content in skin (especially combined with the Dermaquest Essential B5 Hydrating Serum!).  It’s awesome on skin that has been exposed to sun or wind and it is soothing when you are in the sweltering heat uncomfortable and just want the refreshment of a spritz.  It comes in a leek proof package, so is easy to take along on summer trips!

5. Hyaluronic Acid (hold on to that water!)

Hyaluronic Acid (HA), specifically Dermaquest Essential B5 Hydrating Serum.  We talk about this product A LOT! There is good reason, it is hands down our favourite HA product, mostly because it layers brilliantly with other products.  Being in the sun can suck the life out of your skin, leaving you feeling dry and lightly pruneish.  The Dermaquest Essential B5 Hydrating Serum prevents dehydration before it becomes problematic! It can be layer under your current moisturizer, or SPF or makeup.  It is very versatile, adapted to all skin types and hypoallergenic.

Ask The Scientist ~ How Does Atmospheric Pollution Impact My Skin?

Q: How does atmospheric pollution impact my skin and its health?

A: Humans are exposed to air pollution, which has major effects on  skin health. Airborne pollutants exist in multiple forms: solids, liquids, gases and fine particulate matter. These are absorbed directly through the skin into the subcutaneous tissue or through hair follicles and sweat + sebaceous glands. Global urbanization and exploding worldwide energy consumption  have exposed humans to increased quantities of atmospheric pollution. The skin, as the largest organ of the body, acts as a physical, chemical and an immunological barrier against environmental factors.  Whenever a prolonged and repetitive exposure to environmental pollutants exceeds the skin’s normal potential for defence, we see a disturbance in the [skin] barrier functions leading to the development of various skin diseases. Main air pollutants which affect the skin are UV radiation, infrareds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, cigarette smoke, smog and heavy metals.

Air pollutants exert a harmful effect on the skin by increasing oxidative stress which counters the skin’s antioxidant (AOx) defenses. There is a depletion of enzymatic (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase and catalase) and non-enzymatic (Vitamin E, Vitamin C and glutathione) antioxidant capacity. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated that interact with the lipid-rich plasma membrane to initiate the lipid peroxidation cascade. ROS also stimulate the release of pro-inflammatory molecules which results in the accumulation of neutrophils and other phagocytic cells that further generate free radicals, thereby resulting in a vicious cycle.  Air pollution induces severe alterations of the normal functions of lipids, DNA and/or proteins in the human skin via oxidative stress/damage, leading to extrinsic skin aging, inflammatory or allergic conditions such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, acne and skin cancer.
