The Art of the Triple Cleanse ~ The New Way to Deep Clean Your Skin

BOO!! Hello Calgary, now that we have your attention… have you ever heard of triple cleansing? With Halloween right around the corner, we need to think about the best possible costume and amazing makeup to win top prize at all the parties we will attend. An equally important detail to think about is our skincare routine for makeup removal! We don’t want to pay for one night of glory (Yay, first place!) with a month of clogging and/or breakouts (eeeeekkk, scary).

Double cleansing is good but triple is better! High coverage makeup has more oils, silicones and waxes in it for better coverage. Better coverage means more clogged pores, especially if you are acne prone. A good removal regimen at the end of the day is always important but ESPECIALLY important when wearing high coverage or specialty (Halloween) makeup! Makeup removal is not the only reason we need a good evening cleanse; throughout the day, airborne bacteria, dirt, dust and pollution is attracted to your skin, and if they aren’t washed away properly, they could potentially contribute to aging, enlarged pores and breakouts (triple eeeeekkk).

Here at SkinScience we like to do a triple cleanse. Your first cleanse is to remove makeup, the second to cleanse the skin and the third to exfoliate, unclog and refine your pores for better product absorption.

If you’re still not sure what we’re talking about, triple cleansing involves using a cleanser that is oil-based, or a micellar water (for acne prone) first to break down makeup, primer, SPF and sebum on the surface of your skin. The first cleanse removes makeup primarily. Following it with a deeper water-based cleanser, a second round of cleansing will clean much deeper into the pores to remove any impurities such as sweat and bacteria. Then lastly for our third cleanse using an exfoliating scrub (make sure this is not a nutshell based!), to remove pollution, debris, and to promote skin renewal for brighter more refined skin and better product absorption.

To make it easy we have broken it down into three skin type routines with some of our top selling products;

Dry Skin

  2. Aliquote Skin Detox Micellar Gelee – Gentle sulfate-free cleanser with chamomile essential oil and peptides soothes and hydrates normal to sensitive skin. Algae extract clears away makeup, debris, and pollution. SHOP
  3. Dermaquest Algae Polishing Scrub – This cooling scrub uses jojoba beads to remove excess skin cells through gentle exfoliation, leaving the skin smooth and prepped for better product absorption. Deeply hydrating, this scrub primes the skin while relaxing algae extract soothes inflammation. SHOP

The first cleansing step is important to make sure you wash until there isn’t a single trace of makeup left. If you wear a lot of makeup, this could take 2-3 times, but if you’ve spent time putting makeup on, it makes sense to spend time taking it off, right? After all, a smooth canvas is best for makeup application and we need to keep our skin healthy.

Once you’ve removed the surface grime, it’s time for a deep water-based cleanse – and that doesn’t mean a quick splash. Whether you are triple cleansing or not, make sure to massage your cleanser in for a minute to thoroughly remove toxins, pollution and product buildup. This is especially important if it is an enzyme- or acid-based cleanser, so it has time to perform properly (eating away dead skin cells) – even two minutes would be better.

Taking at least a minute to do a water-based cleanse will ensure you gain all the benefits from your cleanser and its ingredients. On average, most people only spend about twenty seconds on cleansing, which isn’t enough time to massage the cleanser in properly.

The third step of the triple cleanse should be performed 2-3 times per week. Exfoliation is essential for healthy skin, but needs to be performed gently as to not create unwanted (and pro-aging) inflammation.

The temperature of the water matters, too. Too hot and you could risk irritating the skin,  especially if you suffer from acne or skin conditions such as rosacea, so it’s best to rinse with water that is lukewarm.

Triple cleansing each evening will also brighten any dullness, adding the exfoliating cleanse into any routine will slough away the dead skin cells that are sitting on the surface and will allow serums and moisturizers to better absorb.

Is it possible to over-wash your skin?

While your skin needs to be cleansed twice a day – morning and evening – a triple cleanse isn’t always necessary – especially when you wake up in the morning.

A single water-based cleanse in the AM will cleanse away the skin’s naturally produced oils and everything the skin has detoxed overnight. It will also better prepare your skin to absorb daily routine products. Over-washing can lead to dryness, sensitivity and irritation. The ideal cleanser should be non-stripping of the skins natural oils, and it’s important not to rub the skin too harshly.

If you are using retinol or other forms of smart exfoliation to be left on the skin at night, it would be better to skip the scrub in the triple cleanse and replace it with the smart exfoliation on those evenings.

With a triple cleanse you are sure to remove all makeup, pollution and debris, as well as keep the skin renewal process at its best for a clear, smooth and glowing complexion. Leave the scary face for Halloween!

Post Party Skin Fix

The party last night was a blast! The food was delicious, the music was amazing and the cocktails were delightfully tasty. But now the night is over, it’s the next day and looking back at you in the mirror is a person with skin that looks like it partied last night like it was 1999.  You’ve got work to get to, life to get on with….. how do you fix this? Like always, we have got ya’ covered!  Here is our 5 step post party skin fix – you might be feeling the night before, but there is no need to look like you are!

Step One:  Just Add Water

Mix 1 part Gatorade and 2 parts water, and drink it. Hydration drinks are chock full of sugar and sodium, diluting them gives you water you need, with a hydration boost so you absorb it better, without the extra calories, and puffing up side effects that sometimes happen when you drink hydration drinks straight.

Step two: Retrain to Retain (aka retrain your skin to retain water)

After cleansing your face in the shower (using a gentle microfiber cloth to buff away the leftovers from the night before) once out, while your skin is still damp liberally apply (and we mean liberally, don’t skimp!) a dose of Hydrating B5 Gel. This will help your skin hold onto water, water that was whisked away the night before by the last two (or three) cocktails consumed 😉

Step three: Spritz and Spray Away

Avene Thermal Spring Water. Repeat. Over and over as often as you want.  This product will not only feel amazing on puffy, tired skin, it will help reduce post party redness and inflammation.  The best part? You literally cannot overdo it, so keep up the spritzing all day long.

Step four: Hydrate

Moisturize. Your temptation will be to find your heaviest moisturizer, but stick with a light weight moisturizer like the Dermaquest Essential Moisturizer so that you can re-apply steps 2-4 a few times throughout the day if needed.

Step five: Apply a Bit of Faux Glow

Go easy on the makeup. All you need is touch of highlighter, a sheer warm pink lipstick, and a swipe of water proof mascara. This simple application will brighten your complexion and withstand re-application of your B5 Gel and your Avene Thermal Spring Water throughout the day.  Heavy makeup applications on skin that has not recovered yet will only highlight the lack of luster in your skin and make you look worse.

Once you have survived the first 12 hours post party, your skin is ready to return to its regular daily routine. Returning to your routine will help get your skin back on track.  If you’re still feeling a little dull post-holiday season, give us a call to book a dermaplaning to reset your skin and return yourself to your glowing glory!

Hexam Cleanser Life Hacks

At SkinScience, we Loooovvee our Hexam cleanser.  This lovely cleanser is one of our best sellers.  With its ability to banish acne causing bacteria while reducing inflammation without stripping skin, it’s not a surprise we love it so much.  In addition, it also happens to be gentle enough for sensitive skin, including rosacea prone skin. It has earned its status as a best seller for good reason.

Over the years, we have learned a few tricks, shortcuts and life enhancing tips specific to Hexam cleanser, and we are excited to share them with you!

Anti-Microbial Makeup Brush Cleaner

Concerned that your makeup brushes are harbouring acne causing bacteria?  Perhaps, they have lost their effectiveness? Hexam cleanser makes an marvellously effective makeup brush cleaner.

How you ask?

It’s easy! Simply wet your brushes under lukewarm running tap water, add 1 pump of Hexam cleanser to your palm and gently massage the wet brush into the Hexam cleanser working up a nice lather, adding water as needed.  Rinse clean, reshape and leave to air dry. Voila! Bacteria free makeup brush that will work like new!

Beauty Blender Build-up Buster

Anyone that owns a Beauty Blender knows they area a fabulous tool for beautiful makeup application.  They will also tell you removing the makeup buildup out of them is AWFUL.  Enter Hexam Cleanser……

How? Here’s how.

The next time you shower, take your Beauty Blender AND your Hexam Cleanser into the shower with you.  (I know, I know, this sounds weird, but hear me out) The steam in the shower helps break up the build-up of makeup in the blender.  Fully saturate your Beauty Blender with warm water. Add two to three pumps of Hexam cleanser directly to your Beauty Blender, squeeze to active the cleanser and work it deep into the Beauty Blender.  Now, let it sit off to the side in the steam while you wash your hair or shave your legs etc.  Once you are done your in-shower grooming, pick it back up and work the cleanser through the sponge a few more times, now while holding it under the running water continue to work the cleanser through, while rinsing out the cleanser.  This may take a few minutes. Once you see only clean water coming out when you squeeze, you are done!  If you haven’t been cleaning your Beauty Blender regularly, you may need to repeat the whole process again.

Winter Eczema Be Gone

Winter arrives in Calgary and so many of us are unfortunately welcoming dry, itchy patches of eczema.  Often these spots or patches do not respond well to traditional body washes and soaps. Hexam cleanser to the rescue!  Regular use in the shower can even help eczema heal faster! (When used in conjunction with appropriate eczema moisturizer applied after showering of course)

Nicest Shaving Cream Ever

Hexam cleanser also makes a perfect leg shaving cream for sensitive skin.  It provides glide, as well as a much-needed anti-inflammatory boost that sensitive skin needs!

Simply pump one or two pumps into your hands, emulsifying together and apply to area to be shaved, then shave. Easy peasy!

Delicate Cleanser

(**Ahem** Bikini Area**Ahem**)

All women know that their external “delicate areas” should not be exposed to heavily perfumed or harsh cleansers, and finding the right cleanser for this purpose can be a challenge.  So many on the market designed for this area are created with irritating perfumes or harsh chemicals (and frankly, who wants to smell like cheap imitation perfume down there anyway!).  Once more, Hexam cleanser to the rescue.  Cleansers should never be used internally of course (best to think of it as a self-cleaning oven!) but we have found Hexam cleanser to be a gentle and effective external cleanser for our “delicate” zone.

Post C-Section Cleanser

We are NOT physicians, and we do not make medical recommendations or diagnose. Sometimes though, we have great experiences we LOVE to share.  This one is one of these.

One of our long-standing staff had an emergency c-section.  After having two close friends deal with painful infections in post caesarean incision sites, she decided to use the Hexam cleanser to clean the area directly around her incision (this was compliant with the instructions she was given at the hospital).  Upon 4-day review, the surgeon was impressed at how well it was healing.  She of course explained the Hexam to her Dr, who at that point gave approval for direct application of the emulsified cleanser to the healing incision, and she was able to avoid anything even close to an infection.  Now, obviously, this is one person’s story, and you our dear reader should of course always discuss your medical needs with your doctors. We share, because it is one more reason we LOVE Hexam cleanser and all the ways it makes our lives better!

Top 10 Acne Fixes

We talk a lot about our years of combined experience.  It’s safe to say we’ve learned a few things over the years.  Here are our Top 10 Acne Fixes:

  • Don’t pick. If this could be number 2 and 3 without being redundant it would be. To say don’t pick is incredibly cliché. Every magazine article about acne will tell you the same. Having said that, anyone at SkinScience can honestly tell you that the worst things we’ve have had to correct in peoples skin over the years is hands down because they picked or squeezed or scratched or poked acne breakouts on their own face.
  • Cut the sugar. As painful as it is to hear, it needs to be cut. I know, I know….. it tastes so good! But the link between inflammation and sugar has been absolutely proven. So work at removing it from your diet, especially the sneaky sugar hiding in so many packaged foods (many with “Healthy” labels!).
  • Exfoliate. You probably read this one and went, “um, no kidding!”. With acne though, exfoliating does not mean ‘scrubbing’. When you have acne, using the wrong scrub can actually increase inflammation which can lead to more breakouts. Its best to exfoliate acne prone skin with and AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) or a BHA (beta hydroxyl acid) or both. (For the record, at SkinScience we only retail two scrubs, so finding one we approve of is hard, if in doubt, bring it in and we will check it out for you)
  • Ditch the makeup. Well, not all makeups. But definitely any foundation labeled “Long Lasting” (or akin), be very careful with any heavy coverage foundations. Unfortunately, if the molecular size of the ingredients in a makeup are too large to penetrate into a pore it can be labeled “non-comedigenic”, but this doesn’t mean that it won’t cause clogged pores by trapping oil and dead skin cells in a pore instead of letting it all out.
  • Reduce inflammation. This one can be a bit trickier, but it is so important. Pay attention to things that trigger an inflammatory response in your skin, and avoid them. Better yet, find products that contain ingredients like Niacinamide and Hexamidine which can reduce existing inflammation.
  • Nix bacteria. No brainer. Cleansing daily with an antimicrobial cleanser can make a world of difference in acne prone skin. Just make sure to avoid ingredients that can strip the skin as well and trigger that inflammatory response!
  • It’s often counter intuitive to hydrate skin that can be oily. But so many times, skin is oily BECAUSE it’s not hydrated properly. When your skin gets dehydrated, it compensates for the lack of water by increasing oil production. So, find a lightweight, oil free, silicone free serum or moisturizer.
  • Invest in a professional extraction. Repeat up to 3-4 times a year if needed. It’s not fair, you’ve been told to not pick at your own face, and now you have to get someone else to do it? A professional extraction is very different. Your risk of scarring is significantly reduced when you allow an experienced, trained professional to remove clogged pores. It is also more effective, and when done properly won’t increase acne breakouts.
  • Use a good Mineral SPF. Minerals are amazing. Not only do they protect your skin from the sun, (which can cause inflammation, increase oil production, and make acne scarring worse) but mineral SPF’s are also anti-inflammatory! In addition, they create an environment where bacteria cannot reproduce. A definite must have for acne prone skin.
  • Get a proper evaluation of your acne by an experienced professional. So many people struggle for years trying products that don’t work, or self-diagnosing and treating without having the required knowledge This can end up making things worse and wasting a small fortune in the process. Spend the time to get your acne looked at by an expert, and a proper plan in place to help heal your acne and prevent new acne from forming.

We would love to help you discover the causes of your acne and help you create the plan that clears your skin for good! Call to book your consultation and start on your path to clear skin today!
